August signals the end of Summer and what better way to say good-bye to Summer than by celebrating some silly and unique holidays. My family looks forward to these silly and unique holidays every single month. No, we don’t celebrate them all but my kids still kick a huge out of knowing what day each day represents. We keep our silly and unique August holiday calendar laminated on the fridge we can refer to it often. I highly recommend you do the safe. No onto the list!

August’s silly and unique holidays

August 1 – Girlfriend’s Day

Today, let your gal pals know just how much they mean to you and how special they are in your life. Go out for lunch or a drink with a friend. Reminisce about the past.

August 2 – National Ice Cream Sandwich Day

Visit your local ice cream shop and treat yourself to an ice cream sandwich. Make your own ice cream sandwiches and share with your family and friends. What about making a chipwich, for example? It is an ice cream sandwich made of ice cream between two chocolate chip cookies.

August 3 – Watermelon Day

Made of almost 92% water, watermelon is full of Vitamins A, C, and antioxidants. So what are you waiting for? Go get yourself a few slices of watermelon to celebrate this delicious holiday.  Make a lovely watermelon, feta cheese, and mint salad for lunch; and for dinner, make watermelon salsa to go with your fish.

August 4 – Chocolate Chip Cookie Day

This is a day to enjoy those tasty bits of chocolate in your favorite cookies.  We thank Ruth Graves Wakefield for chocolate chips, for if it weren’t for her curiosity and invention, we wouldn’t hover around ovens savoring the moment the timer dings.

August 5 – National Underwear Day

If you’re like many Americans, your mother warned you to always wear clean underwear because you never know when you will be in an accident! Although there are probably better reasons to wear fresh underwear, this is the one that most often comes to mind.

August 6 – Wiggle Your Toes Day

By going barefoot, wearing sandals or flip-flops, show off your toes. Be sure to give them some fresh air and exercise! Take this opportunity to walk in the grass with toes a wiggling!

August 7 – National Lighthouse Day

Lighthouse Day in the United States is celebrated as a way to commemorate the signing of the Act for the Establishment and support of Lighthouse, Beacons, Buoys, and Public Piers by the U.S. Congress in 1789 Sometimes a lighthouse existed both as a ship warning and a guard post from when local militia and army forces were stationed to defend against coastal attackers.

August 8 – National Zucchini Day

Did you know that zucchini is a fruit and that zucchini grows in abundance and is ready for harvest in August?  Zucchini is also incredibly helpful with weight loss since it is low in calories, high in fiber and full of water.

 August 9 – Book Lover’s Day

This day encourages you to kick back and relax with a great book. Under the shade of a tree or tucked in a warm bed, there is no better way to celebrate than reading.

 August 10 – S’mores Day

Today there are many variations on the original s’more. Try spreading peanut butter on the graham crackers before adding the other ingredients. Substitute peanut butter cups in place of the chocolate bar. Replace the graham crackers with fudge-dipped cookies.

August 11 – Play in the Sand Day

Take today off and go to the beach (or at least find yourself a sandbox). So, whether you want to build a castle, bury a friend, write in it, or simply wiggle your toes in it, today’s the day.

August 12 – International Elephant Day

The goal of International Elephant Day is to create awareness of the urgent plight of African and Asian elephants, and to share knowledge and positive solutions for the better care and management of captive and wild elephants.

August 13 – Left Hander’s Day

This is the perfect day to celebrate if you happen to be left handed, or you know someone who is. It is also a day in which to raise awareness about the unique challenges that left handed people face living in a right handed world.

August 14 – National Creamsicle Day

Sweltering in the summer heat? Need something refreshing to cool down? Then just walk to your closest ice cream shop and treat yourself to a cold and delicious creamsicle (or two) because it is Creamsicle Day!  The original creamsicles were made of vanilla ice cream covered by iced orange juice.

August 15 – Relaxation Day

Relax! Do whatever that you feel relaxes you, even if it is for a short while.  Go to the spa for a day of pampering and some “me” time.  Take a leisurely walk in the park.

August 16 – National Roller Coaster Day

Celebrate by visiting an amusement park near you and enjoying a roller coaster ride.

August 17 – National Thrift Shop Day

Saving money is on the minds of everyone these days and shopping at thrift stores is becoming more and more popular.  Clothing, furniture and household goods are great finds among the other hidden treasures within the walls of thrift shops across the country.

August 18 – Fajita Day

Originally made from throwaway cuts of beef, the fajita was developed as a regional staple in the early 1930s.  The beef was cooked over an open fire or grill and served with flour or corn tortillas.  Fresh Pico de gallo, guacamole and southwestern spices elevated the fajita.

August 19 – National Aviation Day

Take a field trip to an airport or somewhere nearby where you can watch planes take off and land. Create a dramatic play area that looks like the inside of an airplane.  Use airplane-shaped cookie cutters to cut sandwiches. Use a classic Rice Krispie treats recipe and then cut them into airplane shapes and decorate as desired.

August 20 – Lemonade Day

Squeeze the day!  What better way than to celebrate the closing days of summer with the drink that epitomizes the season: lemonade!

August 21 – National Spumoni Day

Spumoni is a molded Italian ice cream that is made with layers of different colors and flavors that usually contain candied fruits, such as cherry bits, and nuts.  The typical flavors are cherry, pistachio and either chocolate or vanilla.  These ice cream layers are often mixed with whipped cream.

August 22 – Be an Angel Day

Do something kind for someone.  Use kind words to spread positivity.  Thank the people who make your life better.

August 23 – Ride the Wind Day

Some ideas for celebrating this special day include kite flying, windsurfing, hang gliding, making and sailing boats, watching birds soar through the sky or simply a picnic on a windy day, watching the wind in the trees. Children will love making paper airplanes or other flying toys and watching them zoom through the air.

August 24 – National Waffle Day

Make it easy on yourself and go to the local Waffle House.

August 25 – Banana Split Day

The best thing you can do to celebrate a banana split is to enjoy it with some friends! Grab some spoons and battle your way to the last fudgy, banana-filled bite.

August 26 – National Dog Day

Buy your dog a new toy or two.  Assist an ill or elderly neighbor by walking their dog. Give you dog some exercise by taking him/her to a doggie park.

August 27 – Just Because Day

Buy that outfit, pair of shoes, etc. you want but don’t really need…just because.  Surprise someone you love with a visit or phone call…just because.  Eat dessert before dinner…just because.  Pay the tab for the diners at the next table or the car behind you at the drive-thru…just because.

August 28 – Tug of War Day

Tug of war is so easy to set up and play that many small-town carnivals and other celebrations will include tug of war games…often in a field of mud.

August 29 – National Chop Suey Day

Get your chopsticks ready!  Chop suey which literally means “assorted pieces” is a dish in American Chinese cuisine consisting of chicken, fish, beef prawns or pork and eggs that are cooked quickly with vegetables (usually bean sprouts, cabbage and celery).

August 30 – Toasted Marshmallow Day

To celebrate, grab a stick and a bag of marshmallows, and head outside to toast some marshmallows over the fire.

August 31 – International Bacon Day

You can have bacon & eggs, a BLT sandwich, or maybe just bacon by itself.
