Counting down to Halloween with these 31 classic Halloween stories is a great way to get excited for the spookiest time of year. By now you know Halloween is a H-U-G-E deal in our family. My 8-year-old starts counting down to Halloween as soon as Summer break hits. Reading Halloween themed stories is one of our favorite ways to preserve the Halloween spirit each year.
We try to read 31 classic Halloween stories each year – 1 per day in October. It’s a simple way to ensure we spend some quality time as a family each day and in the Fall that’s no easy feat with school, after-school activities, work, etc. By having a set time each night where we read a classic Halloween story it only helps us get excited about the holiday but makes it easier to spend time together.
Here’s a list of 31 Classic Halloween Stories to Read to Your Family
1 – Little Blue Truck’s Halloween
The Little Blue Truck is a favorite of many kids and this Halloween themed book in the series is perfect to kick off your month of 31 classic Halloween stories.
2 – Room on the Broom
Room on the Broom was an instant classic and this activity book is great if you want to take a quick break from reading and get the kids a bit more active instead.
3 – Pete the Cat – Trick or Pete
Pete the Cat is such a fun character helps entertain kids of all ages. My kids LOVE him and this Pete the Cat themed Halloween book is a perfect addition to our library this Halloween.
4- The Spooky Wheels on the Bus
The Wheels on the Bus is a rite of passage for kids and this spooky take on the classic tale is perfect to help you gear up for Halloween.
5- The Halloween Tree
Since my son is 8 I thought it was important to include some chapter books on this list of 31 Halloween classic stories. Tyler loved this book so much so he’s reading it again this Summer Halloween books don’t have to be just for Halloween I suppose 😉
6 – The Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown
You can’t talk about classic Halloween stories without Charlie Brown! We watch the classic movie every year, but when I saw the book version I knew I had to add it into our Halloween library.
7 – The Night Before Halloween
One of my personal favorite book series for kids is the Night Before books – they come in handy for so many holidays and events. The Halloween installation is such a fun and silly story your kids will love reading!
8 – Itsy Bitsy Pumpkin
By now most kids are familiar with the Itsy Bitsy Spider, but this is the tale all about the Itsy Bitsy Pumpkin. This is such a sweet story and a must for your Halloween library.

Sometimes the character themselves make a book an instant classic and who’s more classic than Mickey Mouse? This Mickey themed Halloween story has been a staple in our house for years.
10 – At The Old Haunted House
The title may sound scary, At The Old Haunted House, but this is such a silly story that your kids are sure to want to read over and over again.
11 – Bonaparte Falls Apart
Bonaparte Falls Apart is one of my personal favorites on this list. It is an adorable story I simply love reading to my kids and has a great message.

You can’t talk about children’s book without bringing up Clifford. The goofy red dog is a staple when it comes to children’s literature and his Halloween tale is such a fun read.
13 – Skeleton Hiccups
Skeleton hiccups is a MUST HAVE if you are looking for classic Halloween stories to read to your family. This book is hilarious! Everyone is my family loves reading this book every Halloween.
14 – The Graveyard Book
The Graveyard Book is a new addition to our collection this Halloween, but I’m already excited to ready it. As a Mom, I’m always looking for new and award-winning books to read with my kids. This one looks like we’re all going to love it.
15 – Pinkalicious – Pink or Treat
Pinkalicious is such a fun and strong female character. Pink or treat is my daughter’s absolute favorite book to read every Halloween or in her particular case, all year ’round.
16 – One, Two, Boo
Do you have a child learning how to count? This is an adorable story about a little ghost that has a fun counting element.
17 – Goodnight, Little Monster
As a parent, you will relate so much to this sweet story. Goodnight, Little Monster is a great addition to any Halloween library.

There’s a Monster in Your Book was designed for the preschool crowd, but even my 8yr old can’t get enough of this adorable Halloween story. This book is so cute! If you buy no other book this year, this one should be it.

The title alone got my kids intrigued – gee I wonder why? Creepy Pair of Underwear is hilarious and sure to entertain kids of all ages.

This timeless classic is a must-have for any Halloween collection

When I think of classic Halloween stories, Pumpkin Jack is one of the first books that come to mind. This book has been pleasing kids of all ages for years!

The title doesn’t exactly scream Halloween, but rest assured this is one the best Halloween stories on the list. A fun trick or treat story your little ones will love.
26 – Happy Halloween Stinky Face
Happy Halloween Stinky Face has been my sons favorite Halloween story since he was teeny tiny. This is easily one of the best Halloween books on the market.
27 – It’s Halloween I’m Turning Green
We actually found It’s Halloween I’m Turning Green from Tyler’s 2nd-grade teacher. He was assigned this book as part of a class reading project. He loved it! Even better? This book is a part of a holiday-themed series of chapter books that Tyler loves reading. Bonus!
28 – Halloween Flip a Flap
This list wouldn’t be complete without a book designed for Baby’s First Halloween. Celebrating your child’s first holidays is so exciting and adding books into the celebrate makes things even sweeter.
